The district of Ratnagiri is one of the most important districts of the western state of Maharashtra. The district has its main centre for administration in the city of Ratnagiri itself. The district is bordered by the districts of Raigad, Datara, Sangli and Kolhapur. The district is also bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west. The district lies in the Konkan region of the state. In the past the district was a part of the princely state of Santawadi and became the part of the state of Maharashtra in the year of 1960 when the whole state was created. The district covers a land area of approximately 8227 sq km with a population of about 16.1 lacs individuals among its boundaries. The district has a population density of 196 peop0le per sq km with a mammoth male to female ratio of 1123 females per 1000 males.
