Thane

The district of Thane is one of the most important districts of the state of Maharashtra. The district is located in the northern part of the state. The district has its main centre of administration in the city of Thane itself. The district was annexed by the British forces in the year 1817 when the Peshwa of the region surrendered to the British forces. The district has gone through many additions and subtractions in accordance with the land mass under its control. The present district was created after the independence of India. The district is primarily located in the virtual Konkan land. The district covers a land area of approximately about 9544 sq km with a population that amounts up to 1 crore 10 lacs individuals approximately making it the most populated district of the state as well as India. The district has a population density of 1157 people per sq km. The district is famous all over India for the cottage industries that it has.
