The district of Dharwad is one of the important administrative districts of the state of Karnataka. The district is located in the western part of the northern Karnataka. The district has its main headquarters in the city of Dharwad itself. The city of Dharwad was a resting place back in the history for travellers. The meaning of Dharwad in the local language also refers to the same meaning. The region of Dharwad was under the rule of the Vijayanagar Empire during the medieval times.  Later on the region was also ruled by the Chalukyas and the Bahamanis.
