Airports in Maharashtra, India

These are the airports that are present in Maharashtra State.

Aurangabad Airport (IXU): This airport was mainly constructed to promote tourism in this part of state. The famous Ajanta Ellora and many other historical monuments are present here. Maharashtra Government with JBIC developed this airport. After that up gradation work was done by the AAI and airport was reopened in the Year 2008. Now it has all the much needed facilities like taxi parking, apron for plane etc. Season flights to Hajj that takes pilgrims from here, provision for the same are present. Various famous domestic fliers like Air India; Jet Airways has operations till here. Facility of cargo terminal is also constructed and Blue dart has its operation here.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM): This is the second largest and busiest airport in India after Delhi Airport. Mumbai being the economic city, this airport serves both national and international crowd. Currently there are two runways here, with 2860m and 3660m length. In the year 2006, keeping an eye on the increasing number of passengers, expansion and up gradation was carried out at a larger scale. It faced a protest because of the large settlement of slums. Two terminals along with general aviation terminal and cargo terminals are present here. Most of the international and national carriers have their operations from this point to several key locations of the world.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG): This is located in the city of Nagpur and is the second international airport in the state. There are two runways here and in the 2008, AAI made a new terminal building that has all the modern state of art facilities like advance baggage handling, CCTV, Lounges etc. Boeing is making their aircraft maintenance facility here and a 50 acres land area is given to them. Everyday around 4000 passengers are handled by it and numbers are increasing. All the major national fliers have operation till here. Blue Dart has cargo operations from this airstrip.

Pune Airport (PNQ): This airport is used by both, air force and civil aviation. In the 2008, it got major facelift because of youth games organized. Both national and international operations are present here. Pune being a key location in term of education and other related services has led to increase in number of passengers to a greater extent. Due to the space constraint, AAI is not able to expand it further to meet up with the increasing air traffic. Because of this a new international airport is under development. It will be ready soon. Also proposal for making a new cargo terminal is under considerations.

Nanded Airport (NDC): This is a small domestic airport and has very limited operations. It was inaugurated in the year 2008. This can handle around 300 passengers in one hour and has six check in counters. All the luxury facilities like Lounge, cafeterias etc. are present at this location. It is located at 374 m above the sea level. Currently it has a single runway whose length is somewhere around 2300m. Reliance Infra, is the current operator of this airport.
