26 January: History about Republic Day of India

For any country, independence and change in governance are very important. On the remarkable day of 26th January, the Union of India also got a change in its governance and declared it republic which changed the whole system of the country. Therefore, this day has got huge significance in the world as it became the largest republic democratic country in the world.

The Moments that have made its Place in the History of India

The Historic Moment

The India was ruled by British government under the Government of India act 1935 but with the independence in 1947 this act was not withstanding and hence there was a dire need to change. Immediately after independence the leaders decide to have own constitution and hence in the month of November only the constitution drafting committee was formed. There were eminent scholars who were part of the committee and the renowned scholar Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was the president of the committee. The committee prepared draft after researching many constitutions of the world and presented in the assembly at various intervals. However, the final draft was prepared in Hindi and English language and handed over to the assembly which was accepted. It was signed by the assembly on January 24, 1950. The assembly decided to bring the constitution in force from 26th January 1950, as it was the anniversary of the day when in 1930 congress had declared the demand of Purna Swaraj.

The Day

Finally the day of 26th January came when the first president of Independent India Dr. Rajendra Prasad took an oath in the Darbar Hall of the President House. As a protocol the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru laid his wreath on Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was moved to Irwin stadium where he unfurled the National flag of India and took the salute of army, navy and air force. Then there was a speech by Prime Minister.

This day was declared as a national holiday by publishing the notification in the gazette.

The Importance

It was the day when the rule of this country was given in the hands of people of India being it a republic. The structure of the government and the rules of the governance were prescribed in the constitution where the people were given the supreme authority. As a part of the system the supreme governance in case of emergency was handed over to the president and governing authorities were left with the prime minister.
