26 January 1950: First Republic Day of India

The Independence was quite new to India from British rule and the wounds of partition were still bleeding when the leaders had decided to have a framework of rules and regulations as per the governed of the union need to work. The constitution drafting committee was formed under the presidency of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The members were asked to prepare a draft of a new constitution in the year 1947 when the first draft was presented on 4th November. However, the final draft of the constitution, which was prepared in Hindi as well as English was presented to the assembly on January 24, 1950 and it was signed by the assembly on the same day. However, it was decided to bring the constitution in force from January 26, 1950 as it was the anniversary day of declaration of Purna Swaraj in 1930.

26 January 1950 - Historical moments of the day

In the morning of 26 January 1950 it was Thursday and the first president of Independent India took an oath. The protocol was decided and the prime minister of India Mr. Nehru went to the India gate for laying his wreath to the Amar Jawan Jyoti, as a symbol of thanks on behalf of the nation to those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the respect and love to the motherland. After the oath, Dr. Rajendra Prasad went to the Irwin stadium to unfurl the tri-colour national flag of India where prime minister joined him. As the chief of the army, he took the salute of army, air force and navy and other parades. Thereafter a lot of changes were made in the celebration, but it was notified in the national gazette that the day of 26 January will be commemorated as the republic day of India as on this day the constitution of the Union of India came in force. Though the first republic day was also celebrated with great joy, but later there are many changes brought in the celebration with the passage of time and today there are many programs that lasts for 3 days also.

26 January 1950 - The Government

From this day the constitution gave powers to the president of India which can overrule all other authorities in the emergency situation. Considering the British parliamentary system India also has dual centers of powers. Hence, in the center there are the Prime Minister and President while in the state, there is Chief Minister and Governor, where the governor is responsible to the president.

26 January 1950 Celebration

The first republic day of India on January 26, 1950 was celebrated with great joy and pride in the National Capital of India, New Delhi as well as other state capitals. From this day there is a tradition to celebrate it at all the state as well as national level. There are different cultural programs and parades are organised by government agencies. Officially, this day is declared as a national holiday and hence the government agencies, banks, offices, schools and colleges remain closed however emergency services have no holiday.
