The district of Jalpaiguri is the largest district of northern part of the state of West Bengal. The district of Jalpaiguri has its main centre of administration located in the town of Jalpaiguri itself. The district is one of most important districts to the state because of the important role that it plays in the field of tourism. The district came into being in the year 1869The district of Jalpaiguri plays a very important role in maintaining a relation with the neighbouring country of Bhutan. The land of Dooars is so called as it is considered to the door to Bhutan. The district of Jalpaiguri is a small and narrow land that is situated amidst the state of Sikkim and the district of Darjeeling. The district covers a land area of 6245 sq km with a population of about 38.6 lacs individuals with a density of population around about 621 people per q km. The district has been identified as one of the 250 most backward districts of India.
