Dussehra History : Origin of Vijayadashmi Festival (Durga Puja)

In this post we will learn about how Dussehra festival originated and what events unfolded before the event. So we will read about these in detail.

How Dussehra Festival got its origin

As per the legends, there used to be a demon king known as Ravana. He prayed to Lord Shiva and got some of the boons that were very unique to him only. He earned those with the help of his great worship and devotion towards gods. But instead of using these boons for the good, he started misusing them. And the problem he created was needed to be stopped. So, Lord Vishnu (Among the Tridev) took form of Human and born to the family of King Dashratha, as elder soon. Somehow events folded that, he and his wife and younger brother were made to live in exile for 14 years.

As the day passed most of their time passed in the exile and only few months were left. But one day, the sister of Ravana known as Supernakha, came to pass by the hut of Lord Rama. He see saw, Lord Rama, she could not resist herself to meet lord because of he was so charming. But lord Rama Knew that, she is Rakhsha (Demon) and has changed his form to a beautiful lady. In anger to it, Laxman, the younger brother of Lord Rama, cut the nose of supernakha, and soon she was in her original avatar.

Supernakha told her brother Ravana about this event and his anger grew over the Lord Rama. So, he came alone in order to fight, lord Rama. But when he saw Maa Sita (he was totally enchanted to see beauty of her). So, planned to steal her with the help of deceptive means. He called one of his men and told him to turn in to a very beautiful dear. When Ma Sita saw the dear, she urged Lord Rama to get the dear for her. As lord Rama went to catch the dear, dear intentionally changed the voice and called for help in the voice of lord Rama. Hearing this Laxman got tense, but he could not leave Ma Sati alone. But Ma Sita insisted him to help his brother. Laxman drew line all over the hut and told Ma Sita not to go beyond that line and left to help his brother. In the mean time Ravana changed his form to a saint and came to the hut for the Bhiksha. He knew that he cannot cross the line and with the play of words he made, Ma sita to come out of the line. As soon as she came out, Ravana changed his avatar and took her to Lanka in his puspak vimaan.

When Laxman and lord Rama returned to the hut they could not find Ma Sita and seeing this they both were really shattered. And then after many month of searching, Lord Rama finally got to know the place Lanaka and even after giving Ravana lots of warning, as to return sita, Ravana did not accepted any of the instruction. So, Lord Rama decided a war against the Ravana.

Then fierce battle between both side army took place and thus in the end Lord Rama Killed Ravana. Detailed information on this whole narration can be read in famous holy book called as ‘Ramayana’. So, this day of win of Lord Rama over Ravana is called as Dussehra or Vijayadashmi.
