Airports in Tamil Nadu, India

Following are the airports that currently functional here:

Chennai International Airport (MAA): It is the third Busiest Airport in India. Being international airport, every year it handles lot of foreign crowd. In the year 2012 as per the official estimates, this airport recorded around 13.5 million passengers coming here. There are two terminals-Domestic and International respectively. One separate cargo terminal is also there specialized in handling cargo only. In the year 2012, the expansion and modernization project of this airport finished and several things like new parking lot, improved terminals were added. Since in order to enhance, the connectivity towards it, a new metro project is being constructed will full swing. There are two runways here, having length- 2,925m and 3,658m and is located at height of 16m above the sea level. Most of the national and international fliers have operations till this airstrip.

Coimbatore International Airport (CJB): Another international airstrip in this state and is located around Peelamedu region which is around 11KM from the main Coimbatore City. This got status of being international in the year 2012 and in the coming years, there will be lot of renovation and expansion work going on. A parallel taxiway for planes and two new parking aprons will be constructed. A separate cargo terminals is present, Blue Dart and Yanda Airlines have cargo operations till here. Most of the domestic carriers and some internationals ones, have operations on this airstrip. Currently there is only one runway here and its length is around 2990m. Located at a height of 400m above the sea level.

Madurai Airport (IXM): This is customs airport, but in the year 2007, it got its passengers terminal also. Since this is a crucial airport, international operations were also started, and for that immigration counters were opened. Flights to Dubai and Colombo are regular from here. There are 7 stands for aircraft to park. All modern facilities like V.I.P lounges, restaurants etc have been made to cater the needs of the people. Currently there is only one runway with a length of 2,285m and has an asphalt surface over it. On the other hand, it is located at a height of 136m above the sea level. Further expansion plans are under considerations.

Salem Airport (SXV): Salem being the industry hub of Tamil Nadu, because presence of iron and cement related factories, is really important location. Due to this Salem airport was constructed. Currently it is only used by private jet and charter flights of companies. Commercial operations have not been so successful here. Current length of runway is around 1,806m and has an asphalt layer over it. Located at a height of 307 m above the sea level.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport: Another international airport in this state which is located at Tiruchirapalli and also benefits some of the other districts here. This airstrip got international airport status in the year 2012.In the year 2009, a major renovation work finished here and various modern facilities were added-like more check in counters, VIP lounges, food courts etc. Immigration counters were also made as this airport is now international one. One separate, Cargo terminal was also constructed to cater the growing needs of cargo coming here. There is a pilot training center also. This airstrip is located at a height of 88m above the sea level.

Tuticorin Airport (TCR): An important domestic airport for the region around the Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. There is only a very small runway and spice jet has operations till here from other cities like Bangalore and Chennai. Currently length of runway is around 1,351m and is located at a height of 39m.
