Mitosis vs Meiosis - Difference between Mitosis and Meiosis

Detailed difference between Mitosis and Meiosis

There are many scientific processes that has huge significance in human life. The process of Mitosis and Meiosis also holds some same value. For the people and students associated with the medical fields it has always been a confusing situation regarding the process of mitosis and meiosis. There is a brief explanation mentioned below which helps the people get an idea about both the processes.

The process of Mitosis:

Mitosis and Meiosis are the two processes of cell division in eukaryotic type of cells. These type of cell division occurs when a chromosome splits. In the process of Mitosis chromosome splits and forms two daughter nuclei. After the formation of two daughter nuclei the process of cytokinesis occurs. In the process of mitosis the daughter nuclei are identical to each other and to the parent cell. There are several phases of mitosis namely interface, prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis.

The process of Meiosis:

The process of meiosis is also referred as a reduction cell division process. The name itself suggests about the process of reduction. In the process of meiosis the chromosome splits into half. In the animal cell gamete is formed after meiosis, it is to be noted that meiosis are mandatory for sexual reproduction in eukaryotic types of cell. Meiosis ensures the stable sexual reproduction due to the reduced chromosome count. If meiosis doesn’t occur for some reason then a zygote will be formed which will contain nuclei twice the number of parent. There are several phases of meiosis cell division, namely meiosis I, prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I and meiosis II.

Now it is clear that mitosis is just the splitting of chromosome in two daughter nuclei cells and meiosis is responsible and necessary for sexual reproduction. In meiosis the number of chromosomes is divided into half than that of the parent.
