Children’s Day is celebrated in India on 14th November every year which is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He was the first Prime Minister of India and is renowned for his love for children. The day is celebrated to show our love for children and encourage them to do well in future, following Pandit Nehru’s vision. Children are like clay and they take the form the way we mould them. They are the most precious gems and play a great role in shaping the future of any nation. In order to celebrate the spirit of children, this special day is observed globally. Every nation celebrates Children’s Day on different dates. The United Nations declared 20th November as the Universal Children’s Day.

Why Chacha Nehru’s birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day?

Nehru was popular among children as Chacha (uncle) Nehru and it is said that he was very fond of children. He was the first Indian who passionately made efforts to give children a better life. He established hundreds of schools across the country, Indian Institute of technology, Indian Institute of Management and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He ensured that every child in India gets free primary education and meals at schools. He believed that a successful nation is only possible if the children and youth are given proper nourishment. To honour his contributions and love for children, Children’s Day is celebrated on his birthday.

Importance of Children’s Day

It is very rightly said that there is a child in every human being. It all depends on us whether we kill it with age or keep it inside ourselves. Children’s Day is a way to pay tribute to the childhood memories that are cherished forever. The day might be a fun affair for the children, but it is equally important for the parents. Today, parents are creating pressure on the kids to be the best in studies or reality shows etc, thus ignoring the desires of the little ones. The day is a reminder to parents that they should not force their dreams onto the children, but give them freedom of choice.

Special Celebrations for the Angels

Children’s Day ensures that children get one day in the year to do their free will everywhere. Schools organize different trips, cultural events and picnics to let the kids have fun. Teachers and parents perform for the children on this day to make them feel really special. Many contests and competitions are held everywhere to unleash the creativity of the children.

It is the responsibility of the adults to make this day memorable for the children and thus gifts, chocolates and other presents are given out to children everywhere. Special films and shows for children are broadcasted on different channels along with special screening of movies at the Children’s Film Festival. Many government and nongovernment organizations visit orphanages and children homes to celebrate Children’s Day with these kids. Charity events where poor children are given gifts and activities against child labour are also held on this day. Everyone all over the country try to make the day special for the kids through different functions and shower lots of love on them.
