Godavari Tir Shakti Peeth

Godavari Tir Shakti Peeth is among the 51 Shakti Peeth of Maa Sati. It is said that, the left cheek of Maa Sati fell here, when lord Vishnu in order to relieve lord Shiva from grief of losing his wife Sati, used his ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ to incise Maa Sati Body. Then, at the place of fall of cheek, this temple was constructed. Janasthan Shakti Peeth is located near banks of Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. Godavari Tir is located near to the famous temple known as Kotilingeshwar temple. Here the idol of maa Sati is called as ‘Vishwamatuka or Viveshi’ and the lord Shiva is worshipped as ‘Dandapani or Vatsnabh’. Meaning of Vishwamatuka or Viveshi is- a divine mother of Universe.

The calmness and beauty of this place gives picturesque views to this pilgrims coming to this part of India. The art and architecture of the temple represents the ancient culture and fine work that used to be done in Andhra Pradesh. There are several of decorations done on these stones and the height of the temple is quite high which gives it massive looks. History of Godavari Tir Shakti Peeth

Some of the renowned people in the Hindu Culture like Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Baladev also took bath in the Godavari River. There is no exact information about who and when this temple was built. But, it is said and also written in Puranas and Vedas that the chin of Maa Sati fell. So, in order to embark importance to this place and pray the Maa Sati, this temple was constructed. Navaratri that falls two times in a year- one in the month of March or April and other in the September or October month depending on the Hindu calendar, is the major festival here. A famous fair known as Pushkaram fair is celebrated year and people in large number flock to this part, to take holy dip in the river Godavari. The whole ambience of temple during this festival is mesmerizing to see and people all over the country come here to celebrate this auspicious occasion. Navaratri are celebrated with full energy, faith, dedication and devotion. Navaratri are celebrated for over 9 days, with some people not eating any type of food that is derived from the soil for these nine days. Special ceremonies and rituals are carried during these days. Another festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm is the ‘Shivaratri’.
