History Related to Luv Kush

Luv and Kush were the two sons of the Lord Rama and Maa Sita and both of them were twins. When Lord Rama defeated Ravana and met Ma Sita, he told her to go through the fire to prove his purity, as he was bound by the custom and practices of the world. Without giving a second thought, Ma Sita travelled through the fire. As she was pure nothing happened to her. Then with happiness Lord Rama accepted her and both of them returned to their home of Ayodhya.

But when they returned home, some ill and weird people started to question the purity of Ma Sita. Ma Sita in order to keep his family and her ‘Swami’ (Lord Rama) away from these allegations left Ayodhya. Then she started living in the pledge of a sage person known as ‘Saint Valmiki’. He was the one who wrote the whole Ramayana before it was not even happened. There Ma Sita, gave birth to two twin brothers Known as Luv Kush. Both the brother used to learn about Vedas etc from the ‘Rishi Valmiki’ and also they started learning about ‘Shastra gyan’ (Arm and fighting skills) too.

As they started to grow older, they become quite good in their Shastra Gyan. One day when Lord Rama was passing nearby, they stopped nearby to rest.  He was accompanied by his brothers Bharata, Shatrughna and Lakshmana. His horse gone in the forest and they started searching for them.

Luv and Kush were playing in the forests and they were amazed by so good horse. They took horse with themselves. As troops of Lord Rama came searching for horse they saw horse with Luv and Kush. Troop asked them to return the horse, but they denied saying they have found the horse and they are now the owner of these horse. This matter went to Lord Rama. Bharata, Shatrughna and Lakshmana tried there force to get horse back from the two, but failed to do so. Seeing the prowess of the two, lord Rama was very impressed by them and he told both of them to come in Ayodhya to attend the Yagya. By then Lord Rama was not aware about the identity of the two.

But when both of them visited the Ayodhya and lord Rama asked about them and their identity. When lord Rama heard everything, the tears came down from his eyes and told to get Ma Sati back. Again Ma Sati in order to prove her purity, and told Ma Prithivi to come and test her purity. Suddenly the earth cracked and Ma Sita was taken inside it and went to heaven. Lord Rama took Samadhi in the river Sarayu. Then Luv Kush started ruling the Ayodhya Kingdom.

How People Celebrate Luv Kush Jayanti ?

As such there are no specific celebrations on this day, but in various spiritual organizations, Ramayana Shlokas are chanted. Also on this day, chanting of Holy Ramayana is considered auspicious and in various places, program lasting for few that involves reading of whole Ramayana book are organized.

People take bath early in the morning and go to the temple for offering their prayers. Especially Lord Vishnu or Narayana is worshipped on this day.
