Eid ul Fitr or Eid al Fitr is a festival observed by the Muslim community to celebrate the conclusion of the month of fasting Ramadan. Eid falls on the first day of the month Shawwal which is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. The word “Eid” and “Fitr” have Arabic origins meaning “festivity” and “to break the fast” respectively.

Eid ul Fitr History

It is believed that Quran, the Holy book of Muslim scripture, was revealed during the month of Ramadan. According to legends messenger of god angel Gabriel visited Prophet Mohammad while mediating on a night during the month of Ramadan and taught him the holy verses of the sacred Quran. As a mark of his respect and gratitude prophet Mohammad asked his followers to fast for the entire month of Ramadan and end this month of non-indulgence with a festive celebrations and feasting.

To commemorate this sacred occasion millions of Muslims from around the world go on a pilgrimage to mecca. This journey is called hajj and is of great significance in every Muslims life.

How is Eid ul Fitr Celebrated in India?

In the month of Ramadan Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and refrain from drinking and eating during daylight hours. Fasting symbolises sacrifice, self-restraint and purification. The fundamental intention of fasting is thanksgiving. During Ramadan Muslims offer five daily prayers and also family gatherings are held during night for the iftari or breaking of the fast.

Month long fasting ends with the festival of Eid ul Fitr that symbolizes a reward for their fasting. Eid begins with the sighting of the new moon at the end of Ramadan. This is a joyous occasion for all and time to spread happiness, love, and triumph.

This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zest. The markets also wear a festive look. People decorate their houses and prepare delicious traditional sweets and cuisines to celebrate the festival. On the Eid day all the Muslims wear new clothes and go for special Eid Prayer ceremonies in their nearby mosque. After offering prayers of thanksgiving for completing their fast during the month of Ramadan people visit friends and family and give each other gifts and cards and children receive money from their elders. They also donate alms to the poor on the auspicious occasion.

Special and grand feasts are geld on this day. Eid ul Fitr  is basically a feast of rejoicing which brings people together fostering of the spirit of brotherhood and harmony.
