Idukki

The district of Idduki is one of the 14 districts that sum up the area of the state of Kerala. The district has its main administrative centre in the city of Kuyilimala which is in Painavu. The district is situated around a small George type opening which gives it the name. In Malayalam ‘Idukku’ means narrow George, thus the name. The district is the second largest district of the state of Kerala with a land area of 4479 sq km. The district holds a population roughly about 11 lacs individuals. The majority of the area is covered by either forests or rugged terrain or both. The density of population of the region is 254 individuals which is quite low when compared to some other districts of the state. The district has a male to female ratio of 1006 females per 1000 males. The district is also the home to many reserves and sanctuaries.
